A new programme designed specifically for the ‘blokes who keep NZ running’ has launched at Orama. Gracepoint’s Tradies Burnout Recovery Programme is targeting builders, sparkies, plumbers, and roofers who are struggling with the day-to-day. The initiative recognizes that the industry offers little room for men to admit when things are getting on top of them.
The programme overview is blunt about the reality of the sector. “The trades are demanding. Long hours, physical pressure, tight deadlines, and the expectation to just get on with it.” For those running on empty, the message is clear: “You’ve been carrying a lot. It’s okay to put it down for a while.”
Being on Great Barrier Island, the experience is tailored around activities tradies actually enjoy rather than a “cookie-cutter wellness programme.” Participants can expect a week of fishing, surfing, diving, and golf. As the organizers put it, “Recovery looks a lot like a good week out here.”
The programme aims to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health in construction. “We know reaching out isn’t always easy — especially in an industry that prides itself on toughness. But burnout isn’t weakness. It’s what happens when strong people carry too much for too long.”
The stay includes professional care, catering by onsite chefs, and the quiet of the Orama community. Families are also welcome to join if needed. “Life can be hard, and at times we all need help to find our way again.”, says programme coordinator Jack Winger.
The cost for the programme ranges from $230 to $350 a day, depending on whether guests choose a private whaler’s cabin or a premium beachfront cottage. For those struggling financially, the Gracepoint Fund provides wellness grants that can cover part or all of the fees.
Stays typically last between one and four weeks. Gracepoint works alongside established networks like Mates in Construction to provide long-term support. “By the end of the programme, you’ll feel more grounded, rested, and ready to get back to work and life with a clearer head and more in the tank.”
Anyone interested in the programme or looking to refer a mate can contact the team on 09 429 0063 or visit gracepoint.co.nz. As Winger says, “You don’t have to go it alone.”
