The once bumpy ride down Motairehe Road has been smoothed out with a new seal extension.
1.2 km of previously unsealed road, regularly used by over 25 families, has now been sorted out by the local board.
The road also serves as the gateway to Motairehe Marae.
The Great Barrier Local Board contributed the lion’s share of funding to the project, with an additional $155,000 from Auckland Transport.
“The board has always pushed for seal extensions, especially around where people are living,” says local board transport portfolio lead Patrick O’Shea.
“Seal extensions up north [like this one] have been advocated for term-on-term. Every time we can tick another one of these off, we do. We’re slowly making our way through the network.” he added.
The project was delayed by slips from the 2023 storm events, although it’s now complete, providing whānau with safer and easier access.
A significant portion of the work was handled by local business Aotea Contractors.
The upgraded road will require much less maintenance than before, thanks to improved drainage and its new sealed surface, O’Shea says.
Other transport projects currently underway, include the nearly completed Hector Sanderson walkway in Claris and Pah Beach berm improvements.
