The airport has opened a new Park & Ride facility on its southern access road.

With over 30,000 vehicles passing through the airport daily, the new facility aims to alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow across the precinct.

Located on Puhinui Road, it eliminates the need for southern travellers to battle through traffic and roadworks to reach the existing Park & Ride north of the airport.

“With around 40 percent of all airport traffic arriving from the south, it’s crucial our southern connections are efficient,” stated Auckland Airport Chief Infrastructure Officer Susana Fueyo.

“The Park & Ride site on Puhinui Road offers an alternative parking option for thousands of airport users.”

The Park & Ride South offers regular bus connections to both domestic and international terminals every 10-12 minutes, with electric buses set to replace the current diesel-powered ones later this year.

Additional features of the new facility include:

  • 700-space contractor car park
  • Six EV charging stations, with capacity for over 100 in the future
  • Dedicated ‘kiss and go’ drop-off and pick-up site (opening later this year)
  • And an Environmentally conscious stormwater management system

The 16-month project provided 130 construction jobs, according to the Airport. Further road improvements in the area are scheduled for completion by late 2024, including widening roads and signalizing the Puhinui Rd/Hape Drive/Tom Pearce Drive roundabout.

The new facility is expected to also be beneficial for those who have struggled to find parking at the existing Park & Ride north of the airport, during peak travel times.
