Auckland Council is proposing a community-led boat wash facility for Aotea to address the growing threat of invasive marine pests and the economic devastation caused by their spread.
The facility aims to provide a safe and convenient location for boat cleaning, discouraging the harmful practice of cleaning vessels on beaches and tidal areas, which significantly contributes to the spread of these organisms.
The need for such a facility is underscored by the discovery of Mediterranean fanworm in Port Fitzroy and the alarming spread of Exotic Caulerpa, which has severely impacted the island’s economy due to the extensive control measures.
The presence of these pests, along with others like the Clavelina oblonga, has led to restrictions on Aotea residents taking their boats to other areas for cleaning services, creating a challenging situation for the local community.
The Council is actively seeking community feedback on the proposed boat wash facility through an online survey and a drop-in event scheduled for September 25th at the Claris Conference Centre.
