Community Rallies as Volunteer Paramedic Temporarily Steps Back

The familiar fluorescent Great Barrier Island ambulance will continue to be seen rolling through the island’s roads, even with a key member of the team sidelined. Volunteer paramedic Adam Johnston recently suffered a back injury, forcing him to take a temporary leave of absence. But thanks to the swift and generous support of Barrier Air, the community’s vital ambulance service continues uninterrupted.

“Unfortunately I injured my back this week, which has forced me off-duty from the ambulance,” Adam explained. With the island relying heavily on volunteer emergency responders, his absence presented a significant challenge. However, Barrier Air stepped up, offering sponsored flights to bring in qualified relief.

“Fortunately Barrier Air have come to the rescue with sponsored flights so that I can get volunteers across to the island to keep our ambulance service running,” Adam shared with heartfelt gratitude. “You’ll be seeing some new faces in the ambulance over the next couple of weeks. Dedicated EMTs and Paramedics that are stepping in to fill the gap. Thanks again Barrier Air, your support is amazing!”

The community’s response has been overwhelmingly supportive. Paul Downie offered a simple, “Here is to a speedy recovery Adam,” while others echoed his sentiments. Selina White said, “Get well, you will be missed,” and Kate Langford offered “Every blessing for a speedy recovery, Adam.”

Many islanders expressed their deep appreciation for both Adam and Barrier Air. Marion Snow remarked, “Wonderful, thanks Barrier Air and St Johns!” Glen Findlay added, “Thanks Barrier Air Saint John’s and Westpac helicopter are vital to us all.”
