Great Barrier Island has been highlighted as one of the world’s emerging travel destinations by BOSS Magazine, a publication focusing on entrepreneurship, technology, and innovative lifestyle experiences for global business leaders, digital nomads, and tech entrepreneurs.
In its recent article titled “In Search of the Next Frontier,” published on March 31, 2025, BOSS Magazine explores how contemporary travelers, including digital nomads, are increasingly seeking uncrowded, exclusive experiences beyond traditional tourist hotspots.
“Whether seeking uncrowded gems, exclusive experiences, or new ways to explore the world, intrepid adventurers are redefining where—and how—they travel,” states the magazine.

BOSS points out that as traditional tourist hotspots like Barcelona, Venice, and Kyoto grapple with overtourism, travelers are increasingly discovering alternative destinations. Among these, Great Barrier Island (Aotea) stands out prominently.
“A staple on emerging destinations lists for years, New Zealand has fully come into its own,” the magazine states, highlighting that travelers are now uncovering the unique appeal of Great Barrier Island. The magazine emphasizes the island’s distinctive natural features: “Visitors [are] discovering the wonders of Great Barrier Island/Aotea, an expanse of wetlands and old-growth forests that became New Zealand’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2017.”
The government has moved to make it easier for so-called ‘digital nomads’ and remote workers to visit NZ and stay longer, introducing special visas designed for the growing demographic. The visa changes, according to the coalition, reflect the government’s recognition of the benefits digital nomads can bring to local economies, especially in places like the Barrier.
