A rāhui has been placed at Ōkupu Point following an extremely tragic event in the area.
The rāhui — a customary Māori restriction placed over an area — is a mark of respect and protection, asking people not to harvest seafood or enter the affected zone until it is officially lifted.
Community members have been quick to voice their support online.
“Glad you have done this,” wrote one. “Kia Kaha”, said another.
The rāhui, while not a formal legal order, is a customary and voluntary practice deeply rooted in respect for the land, the sea, and those affected by tragedy.
No official end date for the rāhui has been announced. Community members are asked to remain patient and await updates before resuming usual activities in the area.
