Barrier Poised for Luxury Cruise Boost

Great Barrier will be promoted to international visitors as part of a luxury cruise land program this summer, as cruise operator Oceania Cruises brings its 1,250-guest ship Riviera to New Zealand for the first time. The ship will not call at the island itself but will offer passengers the opportunity to take part in a pre- or post-cruise Great Barrier Island Adventure based out of Auckland.

Passengers joining the Great Barrier Island Adventure will be offered chartered fishing trips, stargazing in the island’s internationally recognised Dark Sky Sanctuary, and the chance to explore the motu’s rare wildlife.

The visit comes at a time when New Zealand’s tourism sector is still struggling to recover from the country’s lengthy COVID-19 lockdowns, which kept international visitors out for an extended period. Cruise ship numbers have also fallen sharply.

Operators have cited stricter biosecurity rules, port infrastructure challenges, and environmental concerns as key reasons for the decline. Some cruise lines have shifted focus to Australian and Pacific ports, avoiding New Zealand altogether.

“We are incredibly excited to bring Riviera to Australia and New Zealand for the first time,” said Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer of Oceania Cruises. “This new chapter reflects our commitment to offering exceptional, immersive experiences that celebrate the region’s diverse cultures and breathtaking landscapes.”

Oceania Cruises is promoting small-group, low-impact excursions as part of its New Zealand programme. The ship will feature cooking classes themed around New Zealand and Australian produce, along with a variety of dining venues offering dishes inspired by local ingredients.
