Hunter Edwards hasn’t forgotten where he comes from. The young kickboxer grew up on Great Barrier and is now carving out a name for himself in the K-1 scene with Balmoral Lee Gar in Auckland. On Saturday, August 23, he’ll step into the ring at Unbroken 4: Night of the Māori Warriors at Barfoot & Thompson Stadium, facing Marwin Dbaliz from SMAC Gym.
For Hunter, it’s only his second fight, but the training hours are already paying off. After moving off the island in 2019 for boarding school, he left in year 12 to begin an apprenticeship – and picked up kickboxing at the same time. “It’s a bit difficult balancing training and work, but it’s my passion, so I always come no matter what,” he says. “Hard day, long day — I love this stuff. It makes you tougher mentally.”
With his dad a black belt in karate, fighting has always been close to home. Now, Hunter’s own style is all about speed and intensity. “You want to come down and watch me fight because it’s going to be entertaining. There’s going to be plenty of fireworks. Shout out to Great Barrier Island — can’t wait to represent,” he says.
Unbroken 4: Night of the Māori Warriors is a combat sports events, celebrating to ao Māori, warrior spirit, and community pride. Headlining the night is Titus Proctor versus Alex Richings in a five-round war for the ISKA New Zealand Super Middleweight Title. Alongside Hunter’s fight, the card features professional boxing, professional kickboxing, and elite-level amateur bouts, including four amateur title fights under IKBF rules.
With fighters from across Aotearoa and a strong te ao Māori atmosphere, Unbroken 4 promises to be a night of pride, passion, and powerful performances. The event will be livestreamed exclusively on CSN.WATCH, with tickets available now at Eventfinda.
