Blood moon as dark skies reveal the total lunar eclipse.

Blood Moon Set to Rise Over Aotea on Monday Morning

Stargazers on Aotea will be treated to a total lunar eclipse early on Monday 8 September, with the “blood moon” set to create a spectacular dawn display.

The eclipse begins in the early hours, with the first stages starting at 3:28am. The total eclipse – when the moon is fully covered by Earth’s shadow and glows a deep red – will be visible from 6:11am.

Local astronomy guide Deborah Kilgallon from Good Heavens says the west coast is the best place to watch. “I’m planning to get up at half past five and head over to the west coast because you need a west view to be able to see this lunar eclipse well. Maybe I’ll see you there,” she said.

The weather is expected to cooperate, though it may be chilly and breezy. “It’s looking good. Just pop on an extra jumper, put on a woolly hat and out we go,” Kilgallon advised.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to set their alarms early, head west for the best vantage point, and enjoy one of the most dramatic celestial events of the year.

Kilgallon also invited islanders to share their eclipse photos. “If you want to send us some photos, any questions you’ve got. We’d be really happy to see your photos and help you out”.
