Spearfishing New Zealand has announced plans to bring its national championships to Great Barrier Island in early 2026, with Orama at Karaka Bay named as the host base from 27 January to 1 February.
Spearfishing New Zealand says nationals are “always extremely popular.”
Organisers wrote in their announcement: “We are thrilled to be holding the next New Zealand National Spearfishing Championships at Aotea/Great Barrier Island in 2026.”
The programme runs across juniors, women’s, under-23s, over-60s, a photo competition, swim-fin and the open championship over two days. Safety briefings are compulsory the night before each event, and weigh-ins will be held at Orama.
With accommodation and transport limited, the group is telling competitors to “please book accommodation and any transport required ASAP so you don’t miss out.” Orama is offering accommodation and meal packages for the week.
Boats making the crossing are required to be fully equipped and to log their voyages with Coastguard or maritime radio. “The voyage between Great Barrier Island and the North Island is long and the sea can be rough. Please ensure that your vessel is suitable to undertake this journey,” the notice reads.
