Port Fitzroy is welcoming a new generation to its waters this summer with the launch of the island’s first-ever kids sailing club. Spearheaded by local Brad Carde, the club will offer sailing lessons for children, with the long-term goal of hosting regattas and other youth events on Aotea.
The project has been backed by the North Barrier Residents and Ratepayers Association. Carde, a former committee member, told Kathy Cumming, “The North Barrier residents have been right behind my vision and have built an extended storage shed down on the wharf on the reclamation, and I’ve now got an end of the shed there with a nice brand-new roller door on it, and we painted it all up, locals helping make that happen.”
The club will start with eight boats, including Optimists for beginners and Lasers for more advanced sailors. These boats were secured through sponsorship from local families and businesses. Carde said, “They’ve all donated very generous amounts of money. The boats range from $500 to $1,500 each, and they’re perfect starting boats for any Kiwi sailor.”
Lessons will run midweek after school during the summer season, making the most of daylight saving. The focus is on safety, enjoyment, and skill-building. Carde explained, “I’ve just finished my Learn to Sail coaching course, which gives a real insight into teaching kids and how to keep it fun and enjoyable so that they stay interested and safe. There’s knots you’ve got to do, things that have to go in certain places, and procedures that just have to happen in a certain way. But the goal is to get kids out enjoying the water, the salt spray, the wind.”
Sailing also builds resilience and confidence. “Being out on the water teaches kids to deal with conditions, push through challenges, and gain a sense of achievement at the end of the day,” Carde said.
Looking further ahead, the club plans to host weekend regattas on Aotea and eventually participate in mainland competitions, including national events. The club is open to all ages and skill levels. Carde said, “The sailing club is open for all families, adults, young ladies, women, men that are interested and keen to learn to sail. I also have a fleet of Lasers that we’re slowly building up, which are good for adults getting out on the water or taking kids along. So don’t be shy—get up here and join in, and have a good time.”
The club will also hold open days before the school term begins, giving families a chance to try the boats and experience the programme. Parents should watch the club’s Facebook page for updates on open days, lesson times, and upcoming events.
