The total fire ban across Great Barrier Island and Waiheke is officially lifted as of today. Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has moved both islands into a restricted fire season until further notice.
The move to a restricted season means the “prohibited” status is gone, but it isn’t a free-for-all. Anyone looking to light an outdoor fire must still apply to Fire and Emergency for a permit and have it approved before they strike a match.
District Commander Geoff Purcell says the recent shift to cooler, wetter weather has finally taken the edge off the fire risk.
“Recent rainfall means the vegetation is less dry and the likelihood of a fire starting and spreading has reduced,” Purcell said.
“This doesn’t mean there is no risk. People will still need to apply for a permit and visit www.checkitsalright.nz to check if the conditions are safe to light a fire.”
For locals looking to get on with property maintenance, the restricted status provides some breathing room while keeping a lid on the danger.
“Moving these areas into a restricted fire season allows us to continue to maintain public safety and protect our beautiful whenua, while also enabling land management activities,” said Purcell.
Regardless of where you are on the island, the advice remains the same: head to www.checkitsalright.nz to check the current season and whether it is safe to light.
