Kaitoke School is buzzing with anticipation as it embarks on an ambitious project to construct a state-of-the-art pump track, set to be a beast for cycling enthusiasts and a heartfelt tribute to a cherished student, Levi Golaboski.

A pump track, for those unfamiliar, is an adrenaline-pumping cycling track designed to improve riders’ skills through berms, rollers, jumps, and other challenges. Currently, the only other pump track on the motu is located in Okiwi, but the new addition at Kaitoke promises to be a wheelie big deal!

The inspiration behind the project is the memory of Levi Golaboski, a student whose passion for biking and skateboarding was well known. “With his family’s support, the pump track will be built and named in honor of our dear friend and student Levi,” shared Principal Leanne Eloff. Reflecting on Levi’s fondness for riding, she added, “We know he would have loved to see this happen, although he probably would have tried bringing his motorbike along too.”

Aotea’s limited recreational options for youth and the challenge of non-bike-friendly roads is a big motivator for the project. It’s also not solely for the school; it will provide a safe and engaging space for children and adults alike to enjoy biking outside of school hours.

The proposed Levi Golaboski Memorial Bike and Pump Track will dwarf its Okiwi counterpart in both size and features, incorporating a skills track alongside the pump track, all constructed from concrete and compressed lime. This choice of materials came after considering the logistical challenges of transporting asphalt to the island.

Funding the project is no small feat. The estimated cost stands at $100,000. Eloff outlined the multifaceted approach to funding, “We’ve developed a corporate sponsorship package for bigger donors,” she stated, “and we’re also about to start a local fundraising campaign, which our students will be developing.” The school is also exploring grants to cover the expenses. To date, they have raised approximately $30,000, with half already secured in the bank.

Principal Eloff’s message to potential supporters is clear, “We sincerely welcome any contributions.”

The project embodies community spirit and the shared goal of creating a lasting legacy for Levi while providing a vital resource for Aotea’s youth, she added.
