A yacht ran aground and was seen crashing against the rocks along Puriri Bay Road on Monday, drawing attention and support from locals.
The Coastguard was alerted to the incident involving a 34ft yacht with its sail rope tangled around the propeller at 20:29. Upon arrival shortly after 21:00, they found the yacht in distress but say the skipper was already safe on shore.
Photos circulating on social media show the yacht with its navigation lights still on, smashing up against the shoreline, nobody else was onboard.
“The person was supported on land and didn’t require further assistance from Coastguard.” spokesperson Ben Parsons shared.
The incident sparked a series of reactions on the local community noticeboard, ranging from concern to light-hearted comments about the situation. “You can’t park there mate lol,” joked one, reflecting relief that the skipper is safe, despite the unfortunate circumstances of the yacht.
The Coastguard reiterated the importance of maritime safety and preparedness, especially in navigating the challenging waters around the island.
“Responsibility for removing the yacht from the rocks will be up to the skipper.” Parsons added.
