Great Barrier Island is increasingly being recognized as a prime destination for affluent buyers looking for secluded luxury, according to a recent article by Australia’s leading property website, AllHomes.com.au.
The article highlights a growing trend among the rich and famous who are drawn to the island’s unspoiled natural beauty and the opportunity to live a sustainable lifestyle.
Local real estate agent Nadja Court was quoted in the AllHomes.com.au article, noting significant changes in the island’s demographic: “It’s becoming more a playground for wealthier people who can afford to fly in and out who want to be off the grid a bit.”
This shift is reflected in the escalating property values, with homes on Medlands beachfront now fetching upwards of $2 million, she notes.
The transformation of Great Barrier Island has not just been about skyrocketing property prices but also a change in the type of accommodations being developed.
“In the last five to ten years things have changed dramatically,” said Court.
The traditional, modest holiday baches that once dotted the landscape are making way for sprawling estates worth $10 million, $15 million, and even $20 million, she added.
Even the rustic charm of living off-grid—where solar power and rainwater systems are the norm, and properties require either a septic tank or a composting toilet—hasn’t deterred the influx of wealthy buyers, Court argued.
