Anamata Rises from the Ashes: Community Celebrates Full Reopening

The Tip Shop (Anamata Recycling) has officially reopened its doors following months of repairs after the fire that tore through its main shed last December. Locals gathered for a blessing, barbeque, and cake to mark the occasion — a moment of celebration after what has been a huge community effort.

The blaze, which broke out on December 17 while the facility was closed, caused significant damage to the island’s main recycling hub. The fire is believed to have started in bins near the electrical room, spreading quickly through the shed. Thanks to a swift response from the Aotea Fire Team, no injuries were reported.

Since the fire, locals and supporters from beyond the island have donated time, money and materials to help get the centre back up and running. Anamata’s team described the rebuilt space as looking “bloody marvellous” and paid tribute to “our incredible, hard working crew.”

They also thanked the wider community for its support and patience during the rebuild, and gave special mention to Donna, who crafted a new ANAMATA sign from salvaged timber that survived the fire.

The reopening day began with a morning blessing led by Nancy, Cara and Frida, followed by a relaxed gathering where supporters enjoyed homemade cake and a barbeque in the sunshine.

Anamata’s team reflected on the journey, saying: “It’s because of you that places like this (and our mahi) can exist. Here’s to the future — may it be fabulous, educational and full of happiness.”
