The Currach Irish pub is Barrier’s iconic and only pub. Visit the pub for wonderful Irish hospitality, a fine range of craft beers and wines  and delicious locally-sourced pub fayre. Reservations available, but not typically necessary.

Great Barrier Island Sports & Social Club is the only Sports Club on the island, and can turn their hand to rugby, touch, league, soccer, cricket or whatever. A tennis court is also available. Sports not your thing? A restaurant full of culinary delights, a full bar, music festivals, and live entertainment make this place a must-visit anyways.

Groceries, Laundry, Petrol

Stonewall Store & Bottle Shop in Tryphena is the well-stocked grocery shop with a variety of Fresh produce, Freefarmed chicken & meat, Organics, specialty cheese, delicious treats, Icecream, including Locally made Janene’s Ice Dreams, eco cleaning products, hardware, and lots more. Fresh & salt ice, as well as booze. You name it the Stonewall sisters will probably have it, or something close enough.

Mulberry Grove Store – your first stop from the Tryphena Ferry, offers a complete shopping experience with a variety of household goods, food, and beverages. Enjoy their cooked breakfasts, or treat yourself to Thai or Fish and Chip takeaways. MGS are the only store on the island with coffee takeaway. Refuel with their petrol and diesel. The Claris Centre Laundry is your place to take a load off, literally.

Claris Store is what it says on the tin, a general store at the Claris centre round the corner from the airport. Fresh fruit, veges, bread and milk, cold drinks, ice cream and various other groceries and household needs are on offer year round.

In the north the Port Fitzroy Store & Fuel have you covered for gas and grocery needs.

Gulf Fuels Gas Station – Conveniently located in Claris with a fully operational shop weekdays, they also offer 24/7 pay-at-pump service for both diesel and petrol, making sure you can fill up anytime, day or night.

A must visit for your morning coffee, fully cooked breakfast, brunch, lunch, or baked goods to go, check out Pa Beach Cafe in Tryphena.

Tucked along the side of the road in Kaitoke on the way to Claris, Barrier Burga Shak is what it says on the wrapper, the most mouth watering burgers.

My Fat Puku is a Licensed Cafe, Wood Fired Pizza Bar and home to micro-brewery Barrier Brew in Claris.

The Council Service Centre and Library at Claris can deal with Rates, Rubbish and Recycling, Stormwater and drainage, Graffiti, Noise Control issues, you can also make payments and order LIM reports.

If it’s an emergency, call 111.

If you’re on the water and have a VHF radio, call Channel 16, the international channel for maritime distress, and issue a Mayday call:

Say ‘mayday, mayday, mayday’ and state your vessel name and location, then repeat three times.

If possible please provide details of the emergency.

Keep calling until you get a response and follow any instructions.

Aotea Health is the medical centre at Claris, but there’s also a nurse’s station in the north at Port Fitzroy.
