On Friday, Aotea will come alive with the spirit of Matariki, offering a full day of cultural events, kai, and community bonding. The celebrations will kick off at Kawa Marae in the morning and continue at Orama in the afternoon and evening.
Matariki, the Māori New Year, is a special time for remembrance, celebrating the present, and looking to the future. The time itself heralds the appearance of the Pleiades constellation in our skies. As a UNESCO-accredited Dark Sky Sanctuary, Great Barrier Island offers some of the clearest views of the heavens, making it a prime spot to observe the sparkling stars that guide the festivities.
