Green thumbs and gardening novices alike will have the opportunity to deepen their gardening know-how at the fruit tree planting and pruning workshop organized by Grow Food Aotea, taking place on Sunday, July 28th, from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM at Okiwi Passion.
Local horticulture experts, Caity and Gerald Endt, will lead the drive to empower locals with the skills necessary to foster self-sufficient gardens.
The day will start with a focus on the fundamentals of planting new trees, covering the selection of appropriate rootstock, understanding the role of pollinizers, and effective tree spacing. Attendees will also learn how to create the optimal environment for young trees to thrive.
The afternoon session will shift to the care of established fruit trees, emphasizing the importance of pruning to maintain tree health and maximize fruit production. Practical demonstrations will include the correct use of tools and techniques tailored for both pip and stone fruits. The Endts will also share insights from their own experiences, including common pitfalls and successful strategies.
The workshop costs $20, payable on the day, and includes morning tea and refreshments. Participants are encouraged to bring a dish for a shared lunch.
Pre-registration is required, with spots limited. Those interested can contact Caity Endt at info@okiwiPassion.co.nz or by phone or text at 021 212 7153.
The initiative, supported by funding from the Aotea Local Board, aims to create food independence and contribute to the island’s legacy of environmental and community resilience.
