SeaLink has unveiled a new resident discount program for Great Barrier Island, offering a 20% reduction on retail bookings for certain fare types. The initiative comes amid recent concerns over soaring ferry fares.
To benefit from the discount, residents need to complete an online registration process. “You’ll need a photo for ID purposes, like a driver’s license or passport photo.” a spokesperson said. Additionally, proof of address, such as a utility or rates bill, must be uploaded.
“Our customer care team will review your registration, and once approved, you will receive a confirmation and access to the resident portal where the discounted bookings can be made,” the spokesperson added. When traveling, residents are required to show their digital resident’s card before boarding.
This discount comes at a critical time as fares for SeaLink services have surged up to $600 for a single vehicle and driver, and up to $900 for a family of four, one-way. The new deal is poised to alleviate some of the financial burdens for islanders, according to the company.
The new resident portal comes online the same week the company has opened bookings for the Christmas and New Year holiday period, a time when the ferry is typically booked out months in advance.
