Kaitoke School Takes Step Towards Charter School Status – News Roundup

Kaitoke School Exploring Charter School Model

Kaitoke School, in collaboration with the Aotea Learning Hub, is exploring the possibility of becoming a composite charter school. This would provide seamless education for students aged 5 to 18 years on Great Barrier Island. The Ministry of Education suggested this approach due to past fluctuations in funding and enrolments. A community meeting will be held on Thursday, October 24th at 5pm at Kaitoke School to discuss the proposal.

Bird Avoidance Training Offered This Labour Weekend

Bird Avoidance Training is happening this Labour Weekend to help dog owners minimize the threat their pets pose to native birds. The training will take place on Sunday, October 27th at various locations across the island:

2:30-3:30 PM: Sunken Rock Sailing Club, Puriri Bay

9-10 AM: Okiwi Airstrip

11:30 AM-12:30 PM: Okupu Beach

Anamata Expands Recycling Options

Anamata is now accepting a wider variety of construction and demolition materials for recycling. They can take the following items for free if they are in good condition:

  • GIB whole: large, dry pieces
  • Timber/ply: clean, de-nailed, over 500mm
  • Building wrap: no4 (LDPE)
  • Plumbing fittings
  • Cardboard & paper: dry, unmixed
  • All metals: rust okay, includes electrical cable/wire
  • Insulation: large pieces, dry, good condition
  • Carpet: wool, all conditions. Synthetic – large, good quality only
  • Polystyrene: white polystyrene – tape removed

Paid services:

  • GIB off-cuts: new, dry. $0.20/kg
  • Garden/green waste: no stumps or soil. Various fees.
