Island Firefighters Turn Up the Heat in Time Trial Challenge

Great Barrier Island’s finest firefighting crews gathered Saturday for an exhilarating time trial competition that showcased their skill, teamwork, and dedication to protecting our island community.

Crews from Tryphena, Kaitoke, Okupu, and Awana/Okiwi battled it out, demonstrating their expertise in setting up wajax pumps, hoses, and knocking over targets, at Awana Campground. Under the watchful eyes of experienced judges Cushla Buchanan, Dave Spier, Roger Bright, and Izzy Fordham, the competition was fierce and the results were close.

In the end, Tryphena 2’s cool, calm, and collected approach earned them the top spot, securing the coveted trophy until the next competition. Their disciplined performance was an inspiration to all.

The event was a resounding success, drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd of supporters. It was a testament to the strength of our community and the commitment of our Rural Fire Voluntary members and local committee, who work tirelessly to keep our island safe.
